Education can’t be overlooked when thinking about the elements of a truly vibrant community. And higher education is particularly important. Equiping individuals with the skills they need to participate in the workforce, and providing employers and would be employers with a reason to locate, grow and prosper in an area are key roles of higher education in community economic development.

How fortunate those of us who live in Northwest Florida are that we have both an award winning community college, Pensacola Junior College, and a celebrated University, the University of West Florida (UWF). UWF now has over 10,000 students and over 46 degree programs. One of eleven accredited public universities in Florida,  UWF has a second campus in Ft. Walton Beach.

The University turns forty years old this year and a month long celebration is underway now. To learn more, visit www.uwf.edu.com

I just received this from Joanna Gurchiek, our Title Partner at Coastal Floridian - www.CoastalFloridian.com - Joanna reminds me that it really is about much more than getting through the day and doing the deal! Thanks for the pick-me-up Joanna!

Much has been said of late on finding your purpose and living in your passion, but how many of us are really doing that? Are you? Are you sure? How do you know? I’ll give you an example . . .

I once knew a little girl who came home every day after school, books in hand. She went to her special classroom in the basement which was set up with a large blackboard and two desks. She opened those books, took out her pointer, chalk in hand, and taught her little heart out to her “students” for hours. Who was this child? It was me, and I can assure you that when I was up there in front of my classroom with my make-believe students, I was living in my passion. I also liked to play office. I loved to go to the store and buy office supplies and go home and pretend I was in an office organizing, creating little systems, taking phone messages on my message pad, greeting people, etc.

I would imagine that neither one of these two forms of entertainment sound like much fun to many of you, but I considered it play, and when I was “playing,” I was happy and my little heart was singing all the while. I’m using myself as an example because I did not consciously grow up and plan to turn my childhood play into work, but that’s exactly what happened. To this day, I come in to the title company each day and play office and occasionally in the evenings, I play teacher by tutoring students and teaching workshops. I still think of both jobs as play as opposed to work—whether I’m preparing for and conducting a closing or standing in front of a group of students teaching a workshop, I’m actually having great fun. My energy is high, I’m happy, and I can assure you, my heart is definitely singing.

So I ask you, when you are playing realtor or lender or whatever you job might be, are you in your passion? Is your heart singing? It’s a good question to ask these days when the real estate/lending industry is giving many of us an opportunity to jump ship and find another career field. If you’re truly in your passion when you’re doing your job, then you need to figure out a way to stay in it during this downside. If you are misplaced right now (most of us know  at a deep level if we’re misplaced), then this slow market is offering you a grand opportunity to do some soul searching, choose again and find the career field and job that makes your heart sing and allows you to live in your passion.

It’s very tough to actually change career fields in mid-stream—it takes great courage and much support from loved-ones, but it is well worth it in the end. Everyone deserves to be happy and fulfilled in their life, and work is a very large piece of that pie. If you’re in a place where you know it’s time for a change, then by all means, take the plunge and get going! You’re heart wants to sing every single day, and it’s up to you whether it does—or not. All the best–Joanna

Crabmeat puffs with Monterey sauce, fried mullet, seafood pita, crawfish etouffe. The 30th annual Pensacola Seafood Festival celebrates the bounty of the sea and serves up a variety of mouth-watering seafood dishes from 23 vendors at Seville Square, Fountain Park and Bertram Park on Friday through Sept. 23. The festival, certainly one of the most delicious events of Pensacola’s Fiesta of Five Flags, also offers a “side dish” of continuous live entertainment on two stages, one in Fountain Park and the other in the Seville Square Gazebo. Also on tap is an arts and crafts fair showcasing the work of more than 185 artisans and vendors. Admission is free. Festival hours are noon to 10 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept 23. For information, call 850-433-6512 or visit www.fiestaoffiveflags.org.

My assistant and business partner, Ruthie, has taken some much deserved vacation time and as I write this she is on a cruise ship which departed Seattle today bound for Alaska. Having spent 15 years - 1985 to 2000 - living on Fidalgo Island, the first island in the San Juan Island chain - I’m a little jealous. This is the perfect time of year in the Pacific Northwest. The sky is so blue you can see forever and the snow capped mountains stand out like sentries in the distance. The bald eagles, while always present are so very visable during this dry time of year. I think back to my arrival in the great Northwest in 1985, a young Navy wife from Florida completely, absolutely awed by the mountains and the lush greenery. In the 15 years we were priviledged to live on Fidalgo Island I never lost that sense of awe.

Which brings my thoughts to the truly GREAT Places. The place I live now, variously described as the Emerald Coast, the Panhandle, the Redneck Riveria and the Lost Coast was just featured on the Today Show as the “#2 Most Beautiful Place” in the United States. Granted it was actually the entire Gulf Coast from New Orleans to Panama City, Florida, that was featured, but when their cameras were trained on a beach they were trained on my home Santa Rosa Island, or Pensacola Beach. I have travelled to beaches around the world and I have to agree with the Today Show’s beach expert, there are none more beautiful than Pensacola beach. They say the grains of quartz sand, as white as sugar, that came down the Georgia rivers and was deposited on the shores of Santa Rosa Island is the reason these beaches dazzle us. We have taken photos on the beach and people that see them only have our clothes and the emerald green waters as a clue that we aren’t on a snow covered mountain. Yes, dazzling is the word I would use to describe Pensacola Beach.

Pensacola is especially dear to me as it is where I grew up. The city is rich in history, actually having been founded before St. Augustine, FL, which bills itself as the first European settlement in the new world. In truth, St. Augustine is the first “continually inhabited European settlement,” as Pensacola was founded and then the settlement was disbanded after a rough storm scared the Spaniards away for a time. Five flags flew over the city (Spanish, French, English, Confederate, U.S.) and our historical society keeps this history alive. This weekend I hope to participate in a walking tour sponsored by the Historical Society and the University of West Florida that will focus on early architecture and - perhaps more interestingly - ghosts. Yes, there are haunted houses in this city that dates back to the late 1500s.

So, if I learn some truly interesting haunted stories of old Pensacola I will share them here. Having been fortunate enough to live in two very special places on opposite sides of this country I know there are readers who have “Very Best Places” they have lived. Please share those places here. We’re all looking for a great place to live, or at least to visit!
